&lt;p&gt;The subject is a slave ship crossing the Atlantic, and throwing sick or dyeing slaves overboard in order to collect money from insurance companies, who would not compensate dead slaves upon arrival, but would compensate the merchants for slaves lost at sea.&lt;/p&gt;
